creativity and talent

creativity is such a broad term because it comes in many different forms not just in art.

" Creativity is defined as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others.

Three reasons why people are motivated to be creative:

need for novel, varied, and complex stimulation

need to communicate ideas and values

need to solve problems

In order to be creative, you need to be able to view things in new ways or from a different perspective. Among other things, you need to be able to generate new possibilities or new alternatives. "

creativity can't be tied down to creating a great work of art for example as this is only one form, the invention of the internet was creative but it has much less physical presence than a piece of art but this makes it no less in value. looking at the core word create it means to come up with something new and different, what differentiates ideas are the reason for its creation. the phrase necessity is the mother of invention springs to mind.
created for the necessity to communicate over long distance
creativity is so broad that people use it every day to solve general problems not just big problems like how do we cure the world's worst diseases, and it's in the workplace where problems solving is used the most as businesses constantly face problems when developing new products or just trying to increase overall sales.

talent however is a completely different  thing to creativity and is related to skill. Talent is defined is a natural skill, whereas normally you have to practice to acquire skills these are ones that occur naturally in certain people. this statement underpins the utter nonsense that is talent. as far as i could find there are no studies which back up talent as a naturally occurring thing therefore when someone is described as talented it refers to a person who has studied, trained and practiced in something so much that they have become noticeably better than anyone else at the specific discipline. this is the process of acquiring a skill, a talent is basically a high level skill or set of skills, i were to describe someone as a talented drawer  it would really translate to someone who has drawn so much to the extent that they are very skilled at it. a journalist Malcolm Gladwell believes that

"to truly develop a skill, you need to put in 10,000 hours of practice"
must have put in at least 10,000 hours

in terms of making games creativity is key and to a certain extent I don't think that technical constraints hinder creativity that much, obviously companies can only work with what technology is available therefore the amount and detail that a company can create in a game does depend on its platform and what it can handle, the overall look of the game can always be improved but the actual idea and concept would be the same even with unlimited capabilities as the point behind creativity is to make something different
