In 1983 the games industry experienced another “crash”, worse than that of 1977 the cause of which was party due to some companies that produces computers and consoles in north America went bust but also a spate of poorly produced games, one game in particular E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial for the Atari 2600 which was said to have been so bad that Atari threw thousands of unsold cartridges in a landfill site. This games “crash” of 83 was said to have been the end of 2nd generation consoles.

After the console “crash” of 83 the computer gaming market took over from the console market because of their equal capabilities and simplicity they weren’t much different from a console. In 1982 the commodore 64 entered the market and was a very successful, it also featured the same ports as the Atari 2600 allowing player to make use of their old joysticks, the commodore 64 became an immensely popular home computer in the usa and would go on to be the best selling computer model ever. 1985 saw the release of the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) made by Nintendo of course, the NES is an 8-bit console and was released with the game Super Mario Bros which was a hit and proceeded to dominate the market especially in japan and north America however in other places such as Europe it was as dominant which saw other systems like the Sega master system fairing well. It was at this point that their was a significant change from joysticks and keypads to controllers with a directional pad and action buttons becoming the norm.

It was between 1986 and 87 which came the release of The Legend of Zelda, Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy, these games went on to become popular franchises which are still around today.

The fifth generation of consoles is said to be between 1987- 1995

Between 1988 and 1990 there were a fair few consoles released such as the sega Megadrive in 88 and the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System), Neo Geo and the game boy which were all released in 1990. There was a very prevalent rivalry between companies Sega and Nintendo during this generation which has been described as the very first console war.

The fifth generation of consoles started in 1996 after the cease in production of the NES in 1995. This generation of consoles is known for the transition from 2d/3d games and the most well known consoles of the time were the Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64 and the Play station. It was at this point that CD’s started to replace cartridges although the Nintendo 64 stuck with cartridges being one of the last cartridge based consoles in production.

The 6th generation of consoles started with the dreamcast in 1999 and featured one of the many changes which was internet gaming and web browser. The Dreamcast is also the first home console to display in standard definition at all times.
