A film character’s appeal is obviously based on a mix of elements which need to come together to create someone who is believable and relatable in the context of the story and situation. The first element which is noticed is the appearance of the character, this is probably one of the more important elements as the appearance needs to help portray the characters role/story (e.g. a mechanic wearing overalls), although this example is very basic. More complex characters might have less noticeable attributes that still tell a huge part of their life or story e.g. scars or tattoos.
The appearance of a character is the first point at which someone will identify with a character because if they look uninteresting or unnoticeable then people are less likely to notice them and care about what happens to them in the context of the film or game. The script and acting also make a difference when relating to characters because a character can come across completely different depending on who the actor is, their gender and how good their acting is. In a lecture about characters it was mentioned that originally the character ripley from the alien films was meant to be male however it was decided that a woman character would be a change from the norm as the sci fi genre at the time was dominated by male characters. This change made a huge difference I think because although she still comes across almost manly in terms of her attitude and dominance in certain parts of the film she also has the emotional side and female appearance but still managing to pull it off.
My favourite game character is without doubt duke nukem just because he has such and extreme in your face style and attitude it’s hard not to be entertained by his witty remarks and all round style, it hasn’t changed one bit from duke nukem 3d (1997) to the long awaited duke nukem forever (2011).
